A few weeks ago we visited The Forge in Ben Wheeler, TX. We’ve actually been a few times now and it has quickly become our go-to when we want to go out for dinner.
Nestled within an old blacksmith shop, The Forge offers a diverse menu (including some vegetarian options) and regularly hosts local Texas singers and acoustic live music throughout the week. The bar features a beautiful handcrafted rustic cedar bar and is open to the dining room. There is outdoor seating and during the warmer months you can enjoy the open air inside when they open the front roll-up garage doors.
My mother-in-law introduced me to their “Longhorn Lemonade” made with Tito’s vodka, Paula’s Lemon Liqueur, and sour mix, complete with a sugar rim and drizzle of honey. You can see the delicious pool of honey at the bottom of the glass above. It goes down smooooth.
We typically start our meal with an order of chips and salsa. The perfect texture and just a little bit of heat, we go through two baskets before we even know it!
The Forge is famous locally for their pizzas- all made exclusively with Texas cheeses. Last time we went I ordered ‘The Buffalo’- grilled chicken tossed in spicy wing sauce on top of thin crust pizza with bacon, mozzarella, and blue cheese crumbles. All drizzled in ranch. Delicious! The crust is buttery, crispy but soft, and thin with a slight chew. Isabella likes to “build her own” with feta, bacon, and salmon. (Sounds weird, but she eats every single bite.) We all order smalls and always end up taking some home.
James is a fan of their Bacon & Bleu burger. All burgers are ½ lb. and come with house cut fries, lettuce, tomato, purple onion & a pickle spear. (You can substitute a black bean patty if you like.)
I’ve also tried their brisket quesadillas and never been disappointed. I think next time I’m going to order the Smoked Brisket Pizza (smoked bbq brisket smothered in smoked gouda, & mozzarella). Or maybe the The Great White pizza – traditional white pizza with white cheddar sauce, fontina & mozzarella with splashes of garlic infused ricotta & grilled chicken. I love when a restaurant has so many different delicious options, so I have something new to try each time we come back!
Whether you’re craving fajitas, shrimp and grits, pizza, burgers, or wild caught salmon you can’t go wrong stopping in at The Forge. A solid four stars from my family; we just may become regulars.
