We tried a new burger place this past weekend in Canton, TX and it was just as good as everyone has been saying! My in-laws actually told us about Duke’s Burgers & Sports Co. months ago and my father-in-law said it was the best burger he had ever had. After the Van Zandt County reader awards came out recently and Duke’s won several awards, including Best Burger, we knew we had to go!
I wasn’t sure where Duke’s was going to fall on the “sports bar” spectrum, but I was very happy to see that it is family-friendly. The servers were dressed in jeans and t-shirts (no revealing shorts/ tops, etc) and the dining room has a variety of high tops, booths, and regular tables- as well as a large bar with ample seating. Everything was extremely clean and the staff was very friendly.
After you place your order, you are directed to a table with a number. I wish we had mentioned the need for a high chair when we ordered, because the table we were seated at was a high top. When we went back for a high chair later (they are kept behind the counter) we realized that it was much shorter than our table. This made it difficult for our little one to eat and interact with us. I am positive Duke’s would have no issue reseating us if we had asked, but something to keep in mind for next time!
I opted for “The Original Duke”, hold the veggies with sauce on the side. The Duke’s sauce is a mayo- ketchup blend and it was perfect for dipping my fries! I found out later that they have house-made ranch and I have been kicking myself for not getting any. (Next time for sure!) The burger was perfectly cooked (comes standard at medium-well, just like I like them). There are no combo meals, fries and drinks must be ordered separate. The fries were well worth it. I’m not sure if they are double-fried, but they were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Fries come with a house-made seasoning blend (can be ordered without) but trust me, you do not want to skip this! There is a hint of sugar in the seasoning that makes these fries totally addicting.
I even have to brag on the grilled cheese in Sophia’s “Little League” meal (which does come with fries). Have you ever ordered the grilled cheese from a kid’s menu and it just looked sad? That was not the case at Duke’s. I would have totally eaten this. They do offer a “grown up” version with a 4-Cheese Grilled Cheese made of Cheddar, Gouda, Habanero Jack, and White American on Texas Toast. Gouda? Habanero Jack? Yes, please.
James ordered “The Matador” with sliced avocado, grilled jalapeños, Habanero Jack cheese, and Jalapeño Ranch with a side of sweet potato fries. Those sweet potato fries were almost a dessert in themselves! I didn’t sample his burger, but dang it looked good. The server said it was one of his favorites and that James should have ordered it with a fried egg on top. James gave it two thumbs up and said multiple times that this was the best burger place we have tried so far in East Texas.
We do also really love Big Mouth Burger Company in Emory, TX but James said the tie-breaker between Big Mouth and Duke’s Burgers & Sports Co is that Duke’s serves beer. (I’m not a big beer drinker, so the tie-breaker for me was that house seasoning on the fries.)
Duke’s bar features 20 craft beer drafts and a selection of domestic, import, and craft cans and bottles, as well as Texas ciders! Follow them on Untappd for updates on new beers and events and to see what awesome Texas crafts are on the menu. The night we visited they were offering a pint of Oak Highlands Brewery’s Freaky Deaky or Golden Mustache FREE if you check it in on Untappd.
I saw Fried Oreos on the menu when we were ordering and knew I had to get some. Luckily, I ordered them with my food otherwise I would have been too stuffed after my burger and probably would have passed on dessert. Y’all, these we’re so good.
Someone on Duke’s Burgers & Sports Co. Facebook page commented that eating them is “kind of like going to the fair, without actually going to the fair.” Ha ha, so true. Enjoy the deliciousness of these without the heat of the Texas sun or ridiculously long lines. (That white glaze… I don’t even want to know what was in or how much sugar it has… SO GOOD.)
Five stars for Duke’s Burgers and Sports Co for sure. I hate (and love) when a restaurant has SO MANY delicious choices because it makes it impossible for me to choose. I guess that just means I will have to go back, many, many times! I chatted with another first-time guest at Duke’s and he said we HAVE to order the mozzarella sticks next time. I caught a glimpse of them at another table and they looked amazing- four huge, Panko-breaded mozzarella sticks served with marinara or ranch. YUM! I have a feeling you can’t go wrong at Duke’s no matter what you order.
